Ubuntu: Compiling POV-Ray 3.7 and POV-Ray example

If you don’t want to simply install POV-Ray by:

apt install povray

Compile POVRay

This also works on Windows Subsystem for Linux– you might install an Xwindows server to see previews.

apt install autoconf libboost-dev libboost-thread-dev zlib1g-dev libpng12-dev libjpeg-dev libtiff5-dev libopenexr-dev libsdl1.2-dev

git clone https://github.com/POV-Ray/povray

cd povray/unix

make install

Example POVray

From the MIT POVray tutorial

#include "colors.inc"
background { color Cyan }
camera {
    location <0, 2, -3>
    look_at  <0, 1,  2>
sphere {
    <0, 1, 2>, 2
    texture {
        pigment { color Yellow }
light_source { <2, 4, -3> color White}

You can do wildly photorealistic rendering of fanciful scenes that you can find by a web search.
