A team of four ECE seniors has been self-selected and chosen to design and build the open-source cytometer to help eradicate falciparum malaria. Falciparum organisms inject themselves into red blood cells (RBC), dividing 32 times before the RBC bursts, yielding a dramatic growth factor in the short cycle of falciparum. As RBC become infected, they become sticky and bind to capillary walls, especially in the brain, where death can be prompt and likely and brain damage resulting for survivors.
Falciparum malaria must be eradicated, it is one of the largest killers of humans in the world. Our device will help bring an end to this plague on humanity.
