On many Linux systems (including Windows Subsystem for Linux), getting started with LaTeX is easiest with TeXstudio:

apt install texstudio

A couple popular packages used in general for LaTeX are:

  • Biblatex: apt install texlive-bibtex-extra
  • XeTeX: apt install texlive-xetex
  • FontAwesome (for popular emoji and website icons): apt install texlive-fonts-extra

Optional: latest version

To use the latest version of TeXstudio:

  1. download TeXstudio
  2. remove existing old TeXstudio
    apt remove texstudio texstudio-data
  3. install latest TeXstudio that you downloaded
    gdebi texstudio*amd64.deb
