Intense aurora north of Detroit, Nov. 2004

All across the upper Midwest, reports of extremely intense aurora, not seen since the last intense storm seen at this latitude (and farther south) on the evening of November 8, 1991. The onset was noted by me first as a complete lack of skywave AM MW transmissions (that is in the 530-1710 kHz band). Normally at night I hear stations booming in from a 1500 km radius. But tonight, only local stations were audible due to D-layer absorption at night, I think. Then the incredible display–it looked like time lapse photography in the sky with intense red and green colors
