Install WINE 2.x in Linux

WINE 2.x brings Microsoft Office 2013 and via a better architecture higher levels of compatibility for native Windows executables than ever.

Note: WINE 1.x was capable of Office 2010.

Install WINE 2.x

Note that the Canonical ppa:wine/wine-builds was deprecated.

wget https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo apt-add-repository 'https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/'

sudo apt install wine-devel

This places the WINE 2.x executables under /opt/wine-devel

Make WINE 2.x the default

Add into ~/.bash_aliases the lines

alias wine=/opt/wine-devel/bin/wine
alias winecfg=/opt/wine-devel/bin/winecfg
