Install pip in Cygwin

pip is the Python package manager, which comes installed by default in just about every Python distribution except Cygwin. Alternatives to pip include:

  • conda: Python packages, R packages and compilers
  • twine: Python packages from PyPi, a more modern Python package manager

Most serious Python work on Windows should instead use:

Install

from Windows Command Prompt:

setup-x86_64 -P python3-pip python3-devel gcc-g++ gcc-fortran

Verify

which pip3

should respond

/usr/bin/pip3

not some Windows path you might have for Anaconda Python.

Usage

For example, to install package simplekml that enables Pythonic KML writing:

python3 -m pip install simplekml
