Install WINE-devel in Linux

WINE development versions can bring better compatibility and higher levels of compatibility for native Windows executables Here’s how to install the latest WINE on Linux.

Install WINE repo key

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key

apt-key add winehq.key

Assuming Ubuntu 20.04:

apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'

Install winehq-devel or winehq-stable.

apt install --install-recommends winehq-devel

Note: --install-recommends is important or you’ll get lots of errors messages on trying to install. This installs WINE under /opt

Get the latest Winetricks script:

cd ~
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks

when you want to use Winetricks to install libraries:

~/winetricks

Which WINE versions are available?

You can see which WINE versions are available with

apt-cache policy winehq-devel
apt-cache policy winehq-stable
