Install WINE 4 in Linux

WINE 4 brings better Microsoft Office compatibility and via a better architecture, higher levels of compatibility for native Windows executables than ever. Here’s how to install the latest WINE on Linux.

Please refer to the official WINE install reference as well.

Ubuntu

  1. Install WINE repo key

    wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
    apt-key add winehq.key
  2. assuming you’re on Ubuntu 18.04:

    apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
  3. Install winehq-devel or winehq-stable.

    apt install --install-recommends winehq-devel

Note: --install-recommends is important or you’ll get lots of errors messages on trying to install. This installs WINE under /opt

  4. get the latest Winetricks script:

    cd ~
    wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks

when you want to use Winetricks to install libraries:

    ~/winetricks

Which WINE versions are available?

You can see which WINE versions are available with

apt-cache policy winehq-devel
