Compile/install Geany IDE from source

While Gedit can be nice (thanks to syntax highlighting) for a quick IDE-like experience, it’s worthwhile to upgrade to a basic true IDE like Geany. Installing Geany is as simple as

apt install geany

but if you want the latest features, here’s how to compile Geany from source.

Build

  1. install prereqs
   apt install gcc g++ intltool pkg-config libgtk2.0-dev

  1. Download Geany source and extract
   tar xf geany*.tar.bz2

  1. generate the Makefile and build
   cd geany*

   ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.local

   make
   make install

Notes

If your old system Geany is still overriding, do

apt remove geany
