Access Windows Subsystem for Linux files from Windows

Note: The info below was for the Beta WSL installs ONLY. The new Windows Store Ubuntu app store the user data somewhere else, that Microsoft has not yet disclosed, but would be trivially discoverable. However, there is no reason to access this Ubuntu app data so don’t mess with it.

Obsolete info for Beta WSL only

The (beta only) Windows Subsystem for Linux filesystem was accessible from Windows at:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\lxss

You will need to first go into Folder and File options to enable “show protected system files” in Windows, or use Administrator Command Prompt. Do not create files from Windows in these directories as it might corrupt the WSL filesystem.

WSL directory Windows directory
~  %LOCALAPPDATA%\lxss\home
/  %LOCALAPPDATA%\lxss\rootfs\
